5. Into the Light
"It is the place of the ordinary and the everyday in and through which what is extraordinary shines forth." (Jeff Malpas. 2017. 'Heidegger and the Thinking of Place: Explorations in the Topology of Being.' p. 14. Massachusetts: MIT Press.)
This series responds to the small birds which sometimes fly into the windows of my house and consequently die. I carefully retrieve these dead birds and freeze them, then study them in the studio through layers of glass, using directional light.
This process visually distorts their form and refracts light around them, producing an imagery that evokes the liminality of transitioning from being to non-being.
